Henrik Ibsen, the author of A Doll's House, was born on March 20, 1828 and lived to be 78 years old when he passed away on May, 23 1906. He was a Norwegian playwright who influenced modern realistic drama. His pieces introduced readers to the conditions in life and issues of morality. His life had influenced his plays because the characters were similar to his parents and themes had to do with the financial situation of the family. His father went into depression which might have been expressed through the immorality of pain in the plays and his mother had turned to religion which could be why he includes happiness.
At only 20 years old his first play, Catilina was published but not performed. He moved out to Italy to get married in 1859. Later in 1879 he wrote A Doll's House which portrayed and criticized the traditional role of men and women in a Victorian marriage. Ibsen criticized society often to show the others how the society was really working. A Doll's House might have been based on events that happened throughout his life with his marriage or his parents marriage and that could be why he makes characters based on his parents.
